Generic medicines in Spain

Generic medicines in Spain are still far away from the European average, which is around 50% in volume, and even further from the Scandinavian countries (60%) and the United States (50%).

Generic medicines contribute to obtaining considerable savings, and effectively reduce from 30 to 50% the cost of the medicines.

In Spain, the generic medicines market during the last twelve months (July 2010 - June 2011), only represented 10% of the total pharmaceutical market in value and 23% in volume.

Today, the generic medicines market in Spain integrates 187 active substances. The number of EFG’s approved by the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Sanitary Products is of 5.105.

AESEG has developed proposals with a double objective, to make Pharmaceutical Generic Equivalent (EFG) constitute a useful mechanism to control pharmaceutical expenses at a structural level and, at the same time, to develop a true generic medicines culture in our country.

AESEG was constituted in Barcelona in March 1998 to encourage awareness and use of generic medicines, and to create a true generic medicine culture in our country. Currently, more than 30 pharmaceutical companies form the core group of AESEG, and represent 96% of the market in value.
